Village of Cobb residents, businesses to get faster internet service

Wisconsin community to benefit from partnership between Alliant Energy and MHTC that includes fiber to the home internet service with speeds up to 2 gigabits

MADISON, Wis. (Jan. 12, 2024) – Residents and businesses in the Village of Cobb are about to get a major boost in broadband service. Recently, representatives from Alliant Energy, MHTC, Tri-State Directional Drilling and the Village of Cobb met to commemorate breaking ground on a project that will provide nearly 225 households and businesses with access to internet speeds of up to 2,000 Mbps download/2,000 Mbps upload.

The southwest Wisconsin community, located in Iowa County, will benefit from an expanded partnership between Alliant Energy and MHTC. Similar to their partnership in Hollandale, MHTC will lease strands of fiber from Alliant Energy to deliver customers fast, reliable internet service. The company plans to use local contractors and expects service to be available by June 2024.

“The residents and businesses in the Village of Cobb are the biggest winners,” says John Van Ooyen, CEO/GM, MHTC. “With speeds up to 2Gbps, they will benefit from fast and reliable internet service that allows them to quickly and easily connect for work, education and with family.”

According to MHTC, many Cobb customers currently rely on other means to access broadband or simply go without.

“We appreciate the partnership with MHTC to positively help customers access fast and reliable internet service,” says David de Leon, president of Alliant Energy's Wisconsin energy company. “This is an important step in building stronger communities by eliminating the digital divide that adversely impacts residents across the state, especially those living in rural communities.”

According to Alliant Energy, this will be its final broadband pilot project. In June 2022, Alliant Energy announced its first partnership with MHTC to expand high-speed internet service to nearly 150 households and businesses in Hollandale, Wisconsin. In August 2022, the company announced a partnership with Comelec Internet Services to bring high-speed internet service to the Village of Hazel Green.
