Is community solar right for you?

With so many solar options, it may be difficult to figure out which solution best fits your needs. At Alliant Energy, we want to make it easier for you to choose. Our Alliant Energy® Community Solar program builds, owns and operates a dedicated solar garden on behalf of subscribers.

This program allows you to have access to solar energy without having to:

  • Find a third-party installer.
  • Pay installation costs.
  • Worry about the interconnection process.

All project costs are shared with the other subscribers, which means community solar is more affordable than some other solar options, while still being able to power your home or business with renewable energy.

If you wish to participate, you will receive monthly bill credits based on the energy produced during the 20-year life of the project. We estimate that customers will make back the full cost of their subscription within 12 to 16 years.

In Iowa, customers can subscribe to our Cedar Rapids Community Solar Garden, which we expect to be operational in 2023. Meanwhile, Wisconsin electric customers can join a waitlist for future openings at our Fond du Lac Community Solar Garden or be notified when we announce our next project in Wisconsin.

Questions?

We’ve developed a robust FAQ page that answers many questions about the program. A few highlights include:

When will I start receiving bill credits? Monthly credits will be issued when a subscriber is paid in full, and the community solar garden is operational. Bill credits will be based on the previous month’s solar production and applied proportionately to your electric bill.

What happens if I move? If you move to a new location in the same state and remain an Alliant Energy electric customer, you can keep your solar blocks. If you move outside of our service territory, there are several options. You can:

  • Transfer your solar blocks to the new owner.
  • Transfer your solar blocks to a family or friend in our service area.
  • Give the solar blocks to a local non-profit as a gift.
  • Request a prorated subscription refund.

How do I find my kilowatt-hours (kWh) on my bill? This how-to guide shows the exact steps customers can take in My Account to track their kWh consumption over the past 12 months.
