Making sustainable New Year’s resolutions

The end of the year brings a time of reflection with a focus on growth for the future. Many of us look back at what we did in the past year and try to figure out what we want to accomplish in the new year.

New Year’s resolutions help us set goals for ourselves and make positive changes in our lives. From health and wellness, travel and the environment, there are many resolutions to consider. If you're struggling to come up with goals that support a healthy, sustainable environment, here are some ideas:

  • Learn more about solar, wind and other types of renewable energy. Take it one step further and share the benefits of renewable energy with friends.
  • Consider subscribing to a community solar project to receive monthly bill credits. It’s a more affordable way to take part in the transition to zero-emission energy generation.
  • Start your garden early with a do-it-yourself winter greenhouse. It’s a fun and easy way to grow plants that will naturally enrich the soil and clean the air we breathe.

We officially rolled out Alliant Energy’s sustainability resolutions in 2020 with our Clean Energy Blueprint, a roadmap to accelerate our transition to a more diverse, reliable energy mix. In just three years, the progress toward our goals is evident. Here are some of our accomplishments from the past year alone:

  • We now generate renewable, zero-emission energy at 11 of our solar projects in Wisconsin.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy awarded us a grant for a cutting-edge energy storage system.
  • Interested customers subscribed to all 18,000 blocks in our Cedar Rapids Community Solar garden.
  • We completed a community-scale microgrid system in the village of Boaz that uses a battery energy storage system to keep customers connected during temporary grid disruptions.

These achievements highlight some of the many ways we work to create a more sustainable environment for all. We plan to continue this momentum in 2024 and beyond. Cheers to a happy, healthy and safe new year.
