10 tips for an energy-efficient winter

The temperatures have dropped, but it's not too late to embrace sustainable habits to make a positive impact on the planet and your electric bill this winter and beyond. Simple changes to daily routines and activities can help us enjoy the season and minimize our ecological footprint.

Here are 10 tips to have an energy-efficient winter.

  1. Seal leaks. Unwanted drafts lead to heat loss. Inspect your home for gaps around windows, doors and any other openings. Seal these gaps with caulk or weatherstripping so your heat doesn’t escape, and your heater doesn’t have to work overtime to warm the inside of your home.
  2. Set your thermostat a little lower. When temperatures drop, it's tempting to turn up the heat, but you’ll save a whole lot of energy if you set your thermostat a bit lower and cozy up in warm layers. Start with just a degree or two less than usual and keep going until you figure out your tolerance.
  3. Utilize natural heating sources. Make the most of the sunlight. Open curtains and blinds during the day. This helps warm your space and reduce the need for artificial lighting and heating. Additional sunlight can also help improve your mental health
  4. Switch to efficient holiday lighting. As you prepare to put up your holiday decorations, opt for energy-efficient LED lights. You’ll reduce your energy consumption, electric bill and carbon footprint.
  5. Practice responsible hydration. Dry winter air contributes to dehydration. To stay hydrated, opt for a reusable bottle for drinking water and natural hand creams, lip balms and other body moisturizers. Look for products made from shea butter, beeswax or chia seed oil rather than petrolatum.
  6. Efficient cooking. Plan your winter meals to maximize oven use and reduce energy consumption. Use energy-efficient appliances like slow cookers and microwaves. Batch cooking also saves time and energy.
  7. Reduce waste. Holidays often contribute to higher household waste. If you give gifts, opt for reusable gift wrap and bags. Get creative and consider repurposing packaging like cereal boxes as gift boxes. There really is a surprise inside every box!
  8. Winterize your vehicle. Prepare your vehicle for colder weather and other winter elements. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, use snow tires and schedule regular maintenance. These steps improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and extend its life.
  9. Sustainable winter sports. If you enjoy sports, choose environmentally friendly options for equipment that is durable and long-lasting. If you hit the slopes, for example, try eco-friendly ski waxes and don’t ski in ecologically sensitive areas.
  10. Support local. During winter, support local businesses and farmers by purchasing seasonal produce and goods. This reduces the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation. Winter fairs and markets are also great places to give back to members of your community.
