Sustainability framework guides development

As your community grows, wouldn’t it be nice to know that leaders are investing in a sustainable future? Just like planting seeds in rich, healthy soil, new renewable energy projects and ideas need to be rooted in thoughtful programs that benefit your community for years to come.

Developing sustainable, diverse energy solutions that benefit the environment is one way we at Alliant Energy continue to offer reliable services to customers and build stronger communities. To do this, we follow the Envision® Sustainability Framework developed by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure.

The framework was designed to provide a blueprint for projects that considers a full range of environmental, social and economic factors. It guides our planning, design and delivery of sustainable and resilient energy to the communities we serve.

Sustainability frameworks like this cover a variety of topics including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, creating renewable energy jobs and addressing principles of environmental justice. These considerations encourage confidence in development and ensure new projects benefit the environment.

We were an early adopter of Envision, registering our Marshalltown Generating Facility in 2016 under the first publicly available version of Envision’s rating system. Since then, Envision has reviewed and awarded six more of our projects with Platinum status, the highest recognition [PDF] under the framework.

The projects include:

Project  Verification date   Envision® award level
 Marshalltown Generating Station

 April 2017   Platinum
 Dubuque Solar

And we won’t stop there. The Envision Sustainability Framework will continue to guide how we develop projects from planning to operation to decommissioning. Learn about other considerations we weigh when we plan renewable energy projects.
