How to make your energy use more efficient

Last month, we described the benefits of partnering with the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), a nonprofit, member-based organization that serves as a safety net for energy production and distribution.

MISO includes a number of states across the Midwest, ranging from Louisiana in the south all the way up to sections of Canada. They are responsible for calculating the energy available to ensure there’s enough to power the entire region at all times of the day, including during peak demand.

Being part of MISO isn’t the only way of conserving energy during peak demand, however.

We have several other suggestions for what you can do yourself:

  1. Lower your energy use. It will positively impact your bill and ensure more energy is available to those who need it. For low-cost and no-cost tips to make your home more efficient, visit alliantenergy.com/waystosave.

  2. Explore our programs. Alliant Energy’s Smart Hours program allows customers to earn an initial sign-on perk and a discount for each season (summer and winter) to be flexible with their thermostat schedule. We also have a rebate program for residential customers who upgrade to energy-efficient appliances. Learn more at alliantenergy.com/rebates.

  3. Upgrade to energy-efficient appliances and lighting. Switching to LED light bulbs is an easy way to decrease your lighting costs and air conditioning costs, as they give off less heat than conventional bulbs. Additionally, installing newer, energy-efficient appliances and doing regular maintenance on older appliances helps ensure efficient operation.

By working together, we can ensure our homes and appliances are running properly and efficiently. We also have additional tips and tricks to keep your energy usage down as the temperature warms up!
