Are you prepared for severe weather?

Powerful storms blow through the Midwest no matter the season. They bring lightning, wind, rain, hail, heavy snow, ice, and extreme temperatures all of which can lead to power outages.

Alliant Energy constantly prepares for these threats and is ready to quickly respond and restore service. There are a few things you can do to prepare for severe weather and help crews restore your power quickly and safely.

Before severe weather hits

  1. Assemble and keep a storm safety kit on hand. Include items such as:
    - Battery-operated flashlights, clock and radio.
    - Additional batteries.
    - A first aid kit.
    - A fire extinguisher.

    - Extra pillows and blankets.

    - A fully charged battery pack to charge cell phones.

    - Books or games to keep you and your family calm and occupied.
  2. Designate a safe location in your home to wait for the severe weather to pass – and make sure everyone in your home knows the plan for emergencies.
  3. Sign up for power outage alerts. Receive the most up-to-date information about outages and our restoration efforts when you sign up for outage alerts in My Account. If you lose power, report the outage online to our Outage Center or through our mobile app.
  4. Be aware of restoration efforts. Our crews are ready to respond should outages occur. Whenever possible in storm conditions, avoid driving to keep roads clear for first responders and restoration workers. Learn more about the restoration process in our Outage Center under the section, “How we restore your power.” We’ll also post updates on our social media pages and our news center
  5. Check out our storm safety checklist

If you have a portable generator, take time now to review the safety instructions so you can operate it quickly and safely if necessary.  Before you start your generator, turn off the main breaker in your circuit breaker panel. This prevents electricity from flowing back into the power grid and keeps technicians who work on downed power lines safe as they quickly restore power.

If you or someone in your household relies on life saving medical equipment, have your health care provider call 1-800-ALLIANT so we’re aware of your needs. Additionally, it's crucial to create a backup plan in case of an extended power outage. This plan could include having an alternative power source, such as a generator, or identifying a nearby location with reliable power where you can go.

After severe weather hits

After severe weather moves through, stay away from low-hanging and downed power lines. Consider all wires live and assume they pose a risk to anyone who touches or drives over them. Report outages and see up-to-date restoration times in our Outage Center

When it comes to being prepared for storms, Alliant Energy undergrounds electric lines, builds microgrids and uses renewable energy to ensure the reliability of your power.

By taking these actions, we’re all ready for severe weather year-round. Inform your neighbors, coworkers and loved ones about storm preparations – and stay safe!
