A project manager’s lessons for maintaining lifelong volunteer commitments

“Volunteering is my life blood,” said Sheri Wichser, a lead strategic project manager who has worked with us here at Alliant Energy for 34 years. “It’s the spark that keeps me going.”

Wichser lives in Monticello, Wisconsin. She comes from a long line of volunteers and has been giving back to her community since she was a young girl. Presently she divides her time between United Way of Green County, Zwingli Church and Monticello Community Club.

The variety gives her a chance to play many roles. Wichser has served as a fundraising dinner event coordinator, church congregation president and board member, United Way of Green County board vice president, parade float builder, food pantry stocker, host for displaced families, community meals volunteer, blood donor and bell choir member to name a few.

“Alliant Energy has provided many leadership opportunities for me over the years because of my lead strategic project manager role,” she said. “I’ve taken the skills I’ve learned on the job and incorporated them in my volunteer work.”

In preparation for changing volunteer roles, she mentors others who will take over her present responsibilities. For Wichser, mentoring is also a learning opportunity. “There is so much need throughout our county. Learning from others allows me to understand the overall needs, and how different organizations work together to solve them.”

Wichser is driven to put her talents to use for the benefit of others. “Volunteering lets me see the spark of what we can do as a group to make things better.”

We recognize Sheri Wichser with a 2024 Values in Practice (VIP) award, an honor that celebrates employees who donate time and energy to the communities we serve.

All 2024 VIPs receive a $500 grant to donate to the nonprofit of their choice. Wichser is donating hers to the Green Cares Food Pantry, an organization in which she strongly believes and for which she has volunteered.

We thank Wichser and the other VIPs for how they act for tomorrow, do the right thing, make things better and care for others – the very values that shape everything we do.

“Volunteering lets me see the spark of what we can do as a group to make things better.”
