Wind generation

As one of the top five largest utility owner-operators of regulated wind in the United States, we own and operate nearly 1,800 megawatts of wind energy resources.

Wind energy is a key part of our balanced energy mix.

It allows us to deliver safe, reliable, cost-effective energy to nearly 600,000 homes without emitting greenhouse gases. In addition, wind provides significant economic benefits to our customers and the communities we serve.

  • Project construction creates good paying jobs and stimulates local economies.
  • Landowners who lease land for wind projects receive annual payments for the duration of the project life, about 30 years.
  • Communities with wind projects receive tax incentives they can use as they deem appropriate. Some communities use funds to build infrastructure, renovate public buildings and make improvements to local emergency response services.

Wind energy is part of our plans to accelerate our transition to renewable energy and balance our energy mix across Iowa and Wisconsin. Find additional information about our plans in our Energy Blueprint.

In addition to the facilities listed below, we also purchase wind energy from wind farms across Iowa, Wisconsin and southern Minnesota. On average, we purchase more than 600 megawatts per year of wind generation through long-term contracts. These agreements help ensure we have the necessary generation capacity to meet the needs of our customers.
