We're planning to build a 720-megawatt (MW) natural gas generating facility next to the existing 650-MW Marshalltown Generating Station.
When operational, the Bobcat Energy Center will serve as a flexible energy resource, to be used during periods of peak demand. Designed for rapid response, the facility will ramp up and reach full load quickly to complement operations at the nearby Marshalltown Generating Station.
Both facilities will work together to continue to provide safe, reliable, cost-effective energy for customers.
We expect to begin construction at the end of 2026, and plan to have the site operational in 2029.
Gas generation
In gas turbine generation, compressed air mixes with fuel and ignites to spin a turbine, which in turn spins a generator to produce electrical power.
Our new gas turbines are more efficient, with the ability to quickly ramp energy production up or down. This complements renewable generation. We can quickly and efficiently increase gas generation on cloudy or windless days and likewise quickly decrease it when renewable generation is abundant.
