Vice President and Chief Information Officer
Phillip Smith is Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Alliant Energy. He oversees technology strategy and digital modernization initiatives to advance operational excellence and provide dependable, scalable and future-ready energy solutions for customers and communities.
Phillip joined the company in 2026, bringing deep experience in technology and energy, with a focus on aligning enterprise technology with business strategy. He is known for building strong teams, simplifying complex challenges and delivering practical solutions that strengthen operations and enable growth.
Most recently, Phillip served as Global Vice President of Network and Critical Infrastructure Solutions at National Grid. In this role, he led modernization efforts across telecommunications and operational technology environments in both the United States and United Kingdom. He was responsible for network strategy, critical infrastructure and the integration of IT and OT systems to enhance reliability and performance.
Prior to National Grid, Phillip held a series of leadership roles at DTE Energy, including leading operational technology strategy, advancing grid modernization initiatives and strengthening enterprise architecture practices. He also supported major system transformations and helped guide long-term technology planning to improve efficiency and system visibility. Phillip's background in software coding and architecture provided him with valuable technical skills and a systems-based approach to tackling complex problems.
Phillip holds a bachelor's from American Intercontinental University and a master's from Carnegie Mellon University, both in Information Technology Management. He holds several technical certifications and has completed executive development programs, including Strategic Leadership of Technology and Innovation at the Harvard Business School.
