Renewable Energy Impact

Renewable Energy Impact is Alliant Energy’s voluntary green pricing program that allows you to participate in a renewable energy program through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

When you enroll, you can choose to match a portion—up to 100%—of your electricity use with RECs associated with renewable energy generation. These RECs represent the renewable attributes of electricity produced from resources like wind or solar.

RECs are retired through the program, meaning the renewable attributes are exclusively claimed and cannot be used by anyone else.

The program offers flexibility to fit your needs. You can select a participation level from 1% to 100% of your electricity usage to match your budget and goals.

By participating, you can align your electricity use with your personal sustainability goals in a flexible and convenient way.

A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) represents the renewable attributes of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from renewable resources like wind or solar.

When you purchase RECs, you can make verified renewable energy claims about your electricity use, even though electricity is delivered through the shared grid.

REC tracking and retirement ensures these renewable attributes are only claimed once through the program and cannot be used by anyone else.

For commercial customers: REC purchases can be used to support sustainability reporting and corporate renewable energy goals.

Your participation percentage is the portion of your monthly electricity usage that you choose to match with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). You can select any level between 1% and 100%, depending on your goals and budget.

The REC price is applied to your selected participation level and appears as a separate line item on your bill.

The current price is $0.00488 per kWh. For example, if your home uses 1,000 kWh in a month and you choose a 50% participation level, your monthly REC cost would be approximately $2.44 (1,000 × 50% × $0.00488 = $2.44). Your total monthly cost will vary based on your electricity usage and selected participation level.

The REC price is updated annually, as of January 1 of each year.

The program is optional for Alliant Energy electric customers who want to participate in a renewable energy program without changing how electricity is delivered to their home.

Residential customers participate through a one-year option and must be in good standing with the company to enroll.

The RECs come from renewable energy generated by Alliant Energy’s own wind and solar facilities.

Revenue from REC purchases, after program administration and management costs, is applied to fuel costs for all customers in the state where the participating account is located. This helps reduce overall system costs for customers.

For the one-year program, your participation level cannot be changed or canceled during your initial 12-month commitment.

After the first year, you can update your participation percentage or cancel your enrollment at any time by calling us at 1-800-ALLIANT (800-255-4268) (7 a.m.–7 p.m., Monday–Friday) or emailing [email protected]. Changes will take effect at the end of your current billing period.

Please note that once you make a change, your new participation level will remain in place for at least 12 months before it can be updated again.
