Electric interruptible program for Wisconsin businesses

Check the current interruptible status

In exchange for reducing energy use during periods of extreme demand, your company can receive a discount on the price of electricity for the entire year.

Who is eligible to participate in the electric interruptible program?

• Alliant Energy electric customers in Wisconsin with the ability to curtail a minimum of 200 kilowatts (kW) during extreme electric load are eligible.

• Customers must be on a Cp-1 or Cp-2 rate schedule.

• The contracted interruptible demand will not be less than 200 kW for at least six months in one calendar year.

How does the program work?

When we expect demand to spike, typically on very hot summer days, we’ll schedule a curtailment period and notify your predetermined business contacts.

A typical curtailment works like this.

• Our systems operations center determines the need for curtailment.

• We notify your company via our communication system. We make every effort to provide notice in advance, but notification time may be one hour or instantaneous, depending which tariff your company elects.

• Your company reduces usage to an agreed level, based on your chosen curtailment option.

• We’ll notify your business when the curtailment period ends.

Customers contract for one notification option. The notification option defines the response time to an interruptible event the customer agrees to meet.

One hour: The customer must be able to curtail load to contracted demand levels within one hour of interruption notification.

Instantaneous: The customer must be able to curtail load to contracted demand levels within 10 minutes of interruption notification.

Why do we call for interruptions?

Interruptions may occur for the following reasons.

Reliability interruption: This will most likely occur when we cannot supply our firm power commitments or portions thereof after we exhaust available capacity resources.

Economic interruption: We may call for an interruption for economic purposes when we expect energy prices to exceed a threshold price level.

What is the maximum hours of interruptions in a calendar year?

There will be no more than 50 hours of economic interruption and no more than 150 hours of reliability interruption in a calendar year.

Can I cancel my business's participation in the program?

Your company may opt out of the interruptible program with 24-hour notice. Please note, applicable fees and penalties may apply. Reference the tariff rate sheet for more information.
