Start by caulking and weatherstripping small problem areas on doors and windows. Install foam gaskets behind outlets and light switches to help block indoor and outdoor air flow.

Consider adding insulation or spray foam to attics, basements, crawlspaces and more. Energystar.gov provides a do-it-yourself guide. Some DIY projects qualify for rebates through our partner Focus on Energy.

I need a professional. What should I do?

We have a list of professional trade allies to choose from. Select a qualified contractor and schedule a home energy assessment.

Your contractor will evaluate your home and identify the causes of drafts, discomfort and energy waste. They will offer a proposal with upgrade recommendations, project costs and information about paybacks and rebates. Consider the recommendations and schedule approved projects with your contractor.

How much do air sealing and insulation improvements cost? 

Costs depend on the locations of leakages and methods used to mitigate them. Average project costs for a single-family home are between $600 and $3,600. We offer rebates, in partnership with Focus on Energy, on qualified attic, foundation, wall and duct sealing and insulation projects. Homeowners typically receive up to 25% cash back. Last year the average rebate was $800.
