Portage, Wisconsin battery system in winter

Portage battery energy storage system

Our battery site in Portage, Wisconsin, is adjacent to our substation off Cemetery Road. The 5-megawatt (MW) battery system can store enough energy to fully charge over 800,000 smart phones.

It has been operational since March 2022. The Portage battery system allowed us to implement and develop energy storage as we advanced plans for larger battery energy storage systems (BESS) at other locations.

What is a BESS?

A BESS is a large collection of batteries connected directly to the power grid. These facilities charge at night when demand is typically low and release energy during the day when demand is high. This helps us meet customer needs, reduces the need for traditional grid upgrades and strengthens reliability during outages and severe weather.
