We plan to construct a new battery energy storage system (BESS) in Fairfax, Iowa. The 160-megawatt battery storage is part of our plan to increase reliability for the future. At maximum output, the Fairfax BESS will be able to power over 128,000 homes for four hours on a single charge. We expect to begin construction in 2027.
How will the Fairfax BESS work?
This battery storage system will charge directly from the grid when demand is low. It will then discharge energy when demand increases, such as on hot summer or cold winter days. The ability to capture and store energy to use when needed improves the overall reliability of generation resources.
