Decorah battery project
The 2.5-megawatt Decorah battery project came online in 2021, one of our first in Iowa. It connects to a circuit in the town with a high concentration of customer-owned solar generating systems. By storing excess energy these systems produce and releasing it when demand peaks, the Decorah battery allows us to provide low-cost renewable energy.
The Decorah battery project sends data to Sandia National Laboratories, a science and engineering lab that contracts with the U.S. Department of Energy among other federal, state and local agencies. Sandia then shares this data with Iowa State University’s Electric Power Research Center to study power quality challenges on circuits with customer-owned generation.
