During Winter Storm Fern in January 2026, interstate pipeline restrictions limited natural gas deliveries across the region, constraining critical energy infrastructure. The LNG storage facility in Rock County will strengthen system flexibility in situations like these by providing added assurance for residential, commercial and industrial customers, helping keep homes warm during extreme weather and enabling businesses to continue operating. It will also help manage costs during periods of market volatility.
The LNG storage facility will be located near the company’s Riverside Energy Center campus in Rock County, Wisconsin. About two-thirds of Wisconsin households rely on natural gas for heating, and demand rises sharply during extreme cold. LNG storage helps ensure a consistent, reliable natural gas supply during these periods. It also allows natural gas to be purchased and stored when prices are lower, helping reduce exposure to sudden price increases.
Liquefied natural gas is natural gas that has been cooled into a liquid state, allowing it to be stored efficiently in a much smaller volume until needed. The facility will incorporate advanced safety, monitoring and leak detection systems and is designed to meet or exceed all applicable regulatory requirements.
Rock County was selected for the project due to its proximity to existing infrastructure and its role serving the largest concentration of Alliant Energy natural gas customers in Wisconsin. The project complements Alliant Energy’s broader investments across the region, including solar projects in Janesville, Beloit and Fulton, and is part of the company’s balanced energy portfolio that delivers reliable, cost-effective energy to customers.
