In 2020 we started our One Million Trees initiative, a commitment to plant a million trees over the next 10 years. We’re well on our way to reaching our goal.
So far, we’ve helped plant 627,644 trees across Iowa and Wisconsin.
In addition to the Alliant Energy Foundation’s partnerships and contributions, many of our employees have also volunteered their time to help plant.
Why did we decide to plant 1 million trees?
We have approximately 1 million electric customers, so we’re planting a tree for each person or household we serve with electricity.
Each year, a mature tree sequesters about 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, so 1 million mature trees sequester about 500,000 tons of CO2 a year. Of course, the trees we plant will take time to mature, but every year as they grow, they’ll make our communities healthier, more beautiful places to live.
