3. Reduce hot water use.

Small actions can significantly reduce energy use without affecting comfort or cleanliness. For instance, you can take shorter showers, turn off hot water when you shave or brush your teeth and wash laundry in cold water. Detergents designed for cold cycles are available.
phone and charger

4. Unplug devices or use an advanced power strip.

Many electronics and chargers, including those for computers, phones, shavers, electric toothbrushes and other battery-powered devices, draw power even when not in use or after a device is fully charged. Unplug them or take out the guesswork with smart power strips, which automatically cut power to standby devices.

3. Replace your home's five most frequently used bulbs with LEDs.

LEDs cost more upfront, but the energy savings often offset the cost in less than a year.

Refrigerators use a lot of energy, especially if they’re 10 years old or older. If you have a second unit in a basement or garage, retire it or plug it in only when necessary. Iowa customers, click to learn about our Appliance Recycling program.
