About Alliant Energy

We have two public energy companies that are principally engaged in the generation and distribution of electricity to retail electric customers, along with the distribution and transportation of natural gas to customers in primarily rural communities.

Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL)

• Provides electricity to approximately 500,000 retail electric customers in Iowa.
• Transports natural gas to approximately 230,000 customers in Iowa.
• Regulated by the Iowa Utilities Commission (IUC).
• Provides utility services to incorporated communities and utilize nonexclusive franchises that cover the use of public rights-of-way for utility facilities in incorporated communities for a maximum term of 25 years.
• Sells electricity to wholesale customers in Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa.

Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL)

• Provides electricity to approximately 500,000 electric retail customers in Wisconsin.
• Transports natural gas to about 200,000 natural gas retail customers in Wisconsin.
• Regulated by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC).
• Operates in municipalities pursuant to permits of indefinite duration and state statutes authorizing utility operation in areas annexed by a municipality.
• Sells electricity to wholesale customers in Wisconsin.

Energy business

Alliant Energy has two energy generation and distribution subsidiaries, one in Wisconsin and one in Iowa. The company has a strategic plan built upon two key elements: Growth and Optimization.

• Growth - The growth element of the strategic plan includes accelerating the growth of customers’ electric and gas usage and expanding our portfolio of energy resources to include additional clean and renewable energy.
• Optimization - The second key element of the strategic plan focuses resources on providing reliable electric and natural gas service to customers in our Iowa and Wisconsin service areas. We do this through continued modernization of the power grid, upgrades to the gas distribution system and optimization of the generation fleet.

Alliant Energy owns a portfolio of electric generating facilities operating on a diverse mix of fuels, including coal, natural gas and renewable resources. The output from these generating facilities is supplemented with purchased power.

Non-regulated businesses

Alliant Energy Resources is the parent company of Alliant Energy’s non-regulated businesses. The strategic plan for Alliant Energy’s non-regulated operations involves maintaining a portfolio of businesses that add to earnings but do not require significant amounts of capital.
