Decorah's clean energy partner

We've served customers and built stronger communities in Winneshiek County for more than 100 years.

Commitment

Local line crews who serve Decorah have the experience, expertise and equipment to respond to severe weather and other challenges confronting our energy system.

  • Our Decorah zone is supported by 26 men and women living in and around our community with a combined 388 years of experience.
  • To rebuild the Decorah substation, we used one of our 14 mobile substations in Iowa. The new high-capacity mobile substation represented a $2 million investment.
  • During the 2020 derecho, our Iowa team replaced 3,600 electric poles, installed 6 million feet of wire, removed 28 million pounds of debris and provided generators to Iowa hospitals.

Investment

Investments across Iowa strengthen and modernize the power grid. These projects spur long-term job growth and help Iowa’s economy grow.

  • Recent local projects on Sanford Road, Locust Street and Minowa Heights have helped improve the safety, reliability and affordability of the local energy system.
  • Upgrades to our Decorah substation increase reliability so we can continue to provide the power our customers need at work and at home.

Focus

We focus on working with Decorah to advance renewable energy projects, charitable causes and economic development partnerships that benefit the community.

  • We proudly support and purchase goods and services from 70 Decorah businesses and suppliers. Over the past five years, we have spent $2.6 million with these organizations.
  • The Alliant Energy Foundation has supported park improvements in Vennehjem and Carlson parks, the children’s museum project at the new Sunflower Child Development Center and the Decorah Fire Department’s regional training center.
  • We contributed $15,000 to the city of Decorah for two new electric vehicle charging stations. We’re also working with a grant writer to help the city add two more charging stations.
  • Our Branching Out tree program has added 500 new trees to the city’s canopy since 1999.

Powering what's next

Alliant Energy is a clean-energy leader and delivers sustainable energy to families and businesses.

  • More than 40 percent of the power we delivered to our customers in 2020 came from renewable resources. By 2024, it will be nearly half.
  • The innovative Decorah battery project in Vennehjem Park uses battery storage to increase the use of renewable energy in Decorah and eliminates the need to rebuild one of the busiest circuits in town. This Department of Energy project draws attention to the community’s commitment to sustainability.
