Why we are doing it
We’re learning more about how solar energy and energy battery storage technologies work in our region and supporting the adoption of electric vehicles (EV). We also want to see how these more local energy sources and uses can fit into the electric grid.
This experience better positions us and our customers to make educated decisions in making energy choices. It also further develops knowledge for us and our industry.

Live performance data website
The live performance data website is a collaboration between Alliant Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
On the website, you can see:
- Live and historic data alongside weather conditions and solar irradiance levels
- How the different solar technologies compare to one another
- How the battery energy storage system is performing
- Photos, video clips, interactive charts and more!
We’ve installed “Level 2” or 240-volt (similar to what an electric dryer or oven uses) EV charging stations and are tracking their usage. Within our building, a 30-kilowatt battery storage system allows us to store power and test the impact of shifting its use to off-peak periods when electricity costs are lower.
Ten on-site EV charging stations are available for public use at our Madison general office
(4902 N. Biltmore Lane, Madison, Wis.).
To charge your vehicle:
- Log in to lataccess.com, and click on “Create Public Account.” Provide the requested information.
- You’ll be sent an email confirming you are in the system. Log in to the system with your username and password.
- Select your location on the map and click to get prices.
- Select timestamp and click to get your code.
- Enter the EV charger number (found on the charger) into the key pad, followed by the # key. Then enter your code, followed by the # key.
- The EV charger is ready for you to plug into your car and begin charging.
EPRI is also studying the integration of on-site renewable power sources and energy storage with the existing power grid. Our project is one of several EPRI integrated grid pilot projects across the country.
