You can help make the job safer for meter readers and service technicians by keeping your pets inside, or restraining them away from the meters. Alliant Energy employees follow our strict animal restraint policy to stay safe.

  • We will not step foot on your property if a dog or other potentially dangerous animal is not clearly restrained.
  • Animals must be restrained by a leash or chain anchored to a permanent fixture, caged, or secured away from the meter or work area.
  • Animals being held by their owners are not considered restrained.

If you cannot secure your animals, you can read your own meter on a monthly basis. Learn how.

If you have installed – or plan to install – an invisible pet fence, please contact us at 1-800-ALLIANT (800-255-4268) so we may note it on your account. This helps protect you from liability and protects our meter readers from potential dog bites.

Gas leaks or other emergency situations require employees to use their best judgment to make conditions safe and prevent injury to our employees or the public.

Most electric accidents can be prevented.

All it takes is remembering the basic safety rules and knowing how to spot potential hazards.
