Reading Road Trip encourages kids to read throughout the summer
In the first cycle phase of 2010, the Alliant Energy Foundation awarded a $10,000 community grant to support the Iowa Public Television Foundation’s Reading Road Trip.
During this ambitious tour, Dan Wardell, popular host of the Iowa Public Television’s KIDS Clubhouse, welcomed kids and families in over 60 communities and libraries throughout Iowa to inspire students to read during their time off from school.
The 2010 Reading Road Trip summer reading theme was, “Make a Splash at Your Library.” Wardell told an original story at the free events, and kids received inflatable beach balls to take home as souvenirs of the day. The children were also encouraged to take their beach balls with them on their own family trips and a variety of vacation destination beach ball peppered photos appear on the Iowa Public Television website. While on the Reading Road Trip, Dan Wardell also kept an online journal of his fun, including photos, videos, an interactive map and more!
The Alliant Energy Foundation’s community grants program contributes to educational efforts, as well as arts and culture, human needs, civic and environmental projects. Grants are awarded to initiatives and programs that address community needs and benefit a large number of people.
In the last two years, more than 50,000 parents, community members and children have attended Reading Road Trip story times throughout Iowa, and the Alliant Energy Foundation is pleased to have played a role in its success.
