More renewable energy available to customers and communities

MADISON, Wis. – October 16, 2020 – Alliant Energy’s Kossuth Wind Farm is now operational and generating renewable energy to benefit customers, communities and the environment. Today’s news follows the previous announcement that the company achieved its milestone to add 1,000 megawatts (MW) of wind energy for Iowa customers.

The 150-MW Kossuth Wind Farm is located in the north-central part of Iowa, an area with consistently strong wind resources. This project includes 56 turbines and is expected to provide enough energy to power 57,000 homes. 

“Developments in renewable wind energy create a cleaner environment for all to enjoy. We are excited about our investment and increased commitment to Kossuth County. This project will support the community through lease payments to landowners and increased tax revenue,” said David de Leon, President of Alliant Energy’s Wisconsin energy company. “Wind is cost-effective and has no associated fuel cost, resulting in long-term savings for our customers as we continue to deliver reliable and affordable energy.”

Construction of the Kossuth Wind Farm began in October 2019. This new farm adds to Alliant Energy’s existing wind projects serving Wisconsin customers, including Bent Tree Wind Farm near Albert Lea, Minnesota and Cedar Ridge Wind Farm in Eden and Empire, Wisconsin. The company also provides wind energy to Wisconsin customers through a 55-MW ownership interest in the Forward Wind Energy Center near Brownsville, Wisconsin. 

Along with wind, solar is a key part of Alliant Energy’s transition to adding more renewable energy to its energy mix. Alliant Energy outlines this plan in the company’s Clean Energy Blueprint, which includes adding 1,000 MW of solar in Wisconsin by the end of 2023. This additional solar can power approximately 260,000 homes. 

Alliant Energy’s wind and solar projects keep the company on its path toward achieving their new, aspirational goal of eliminating CO2 emissions from the energy the company generates by 2050, a goal that’s outlined in the company’s latest Corporate Responsibility Report.
