Edgewater Generating Station Unit 4 ceasing operation September 28

Alliant Energy continues to transform its energy fleet to provide clean, affordable power

 

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – September 26, 2018 – September 28 will be the last day of operations for the Edgewater Generating Station Unit 4 in Sheboygan, Wis. The 351-megawatt, coal-fired generator will end nearly 50 years of providing energy to Wisconsin customers. 

“We’re proud of the employees who worked at Edgewater Unit 4 as well as the contribution the generator made in supplying reliable power to customers for decades,” said David de Leon, vice president of Wisconsin operations for Alliant Energy. “Even though we do this with some sadness, we believe retiring this unit makes sense as we continue to transform our energy fleet with an eye on customer cost, carbon reduction and providing cleaner power to the communities we serve.”  

Edgewater Unit 4, co-owned by Wisconsin Public Service Corp., will be the largest coal-fired generator ever taken out of service by Alliant Energy. Advanced workforce planning, combined with the continued operation of Edgewater Unit 5, reduced the impact on the facility's employees. Positions that were no longer required were eliminated through employee retirements prior to Unit 4 going out of service.

Edgewater Unit 5 was placed into service in 1985 and will continue to provide reliable energy to Alliant Energy customers. Over the past several years, the company invested in two major environmental improvement projects at the generator. In addition, this year a new bottom ash handling system was installed to the unit that will help facilitate the closure of the ash ponds on site.

The Edgewater Unit 4 closure follows the recent retirement of three other Alliant Energy Wisconsin coal-fired generators: Edgewater Unit 3 in 2015 and Nelson Dewey Generating Station Units 1 and 2 in 2016. The company’s 730-megawatt, natural gas-fired West Riverside Energy Center is expected to go into service by the end of 2019 near Beloit, Wis. It, along with renewable energy, will replace the power from the retired energy facilities.
