Prairie du Sac Dam parking area and access road to be closed week of June 4
Over two dozen construction vehicles will be bringing in barges for improvement project
PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. – May 29, 2018 – Alliant Energy will close the parking lot area and access road at its Prairie du Sac Dam the week of June 4. The company is starting a dam improvement project that requires barges to be placed in the Wisconsin River above the dam. The closure will allow over two dozen large construction vehicles to bring in parts of those barges to the site.
“Safety for the public, employees and contractors is our number one priority,” said Kathryn Wilhelm, Alliant Energy manager of strategic projects. “We understand this causes a short-term inconvenience for anglers and others who enjoy recreational activities on our property. However, with the volume of vehicles coming in and out of the road as well as staging in our parking lot, we want to err on the side of safety.”
The parking lot area and access road will be closed to public vehicle and pedestrian traffic from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, June 4, through Friday, June 8.
This phase of the dam improvement project will go into the fall, when the barges will be removed. This will likely require a similar closure of the parking lot area and access road in late 2018. The overall project is expected to continue for the next few summers, with each phase bringing a similar process.
“Visitors to the area may notice more truck traffic and occasional noise during daylight hours for the next five to six months,” Wilhelm said. “We appreciate the public’s understanding as we work to improve our 103-year-old dam so it can operate years into the future.”
Alliant Energy has contracted with Nicholson Construction to do the project work. It will include using drilling equipment secured to barges to bore into the spillway above the dam. Other than when the barges are brought in and out of the property, access to the site and waters around the facility should remain the same as usual.
