Vice President, Business Development
Joel Schmidt is Vice President of Business Development for Alliant Energy Corporation (NASDAQ: LNT). His focus is on Alliant Energy’s non-utility-based businesses, including Travero (transportation and logistics), a wind farm partnership with EDF and corporate venture investments (Energy Impact Partners and Next Level Ventures).
In 1988, Joel joined the company as an accountant and was promoted to vice president in 2010. Prior roles include Vice President – Regulatory Affairs, Director – Financial Planning and Analysis, Regional Director – Customer Service Operations and Chief Audit, Ethics and Compliance Officer.
Joel leads our efforts dedicated to exploring and executing new opportunities to innovatively achieve strategic goals by creating growth beyond the core utility business. Opportunities for sustainable-earnings platforms include expansion of current businesses and emerging technologies. By adopting innovative technologies and evolving the ways we work, Alliant Energy moves the needle toward a more sustainable future for its customers and shareowners.
His financial and analytical foundation helps Joel bring unique perspectives and approaches as our industry and society transform at a never-before-seen pace. He is passionate about continuous improvement in his personal, professional and philanthropic ventures.
Joel believes strongly in giving back within the company and community. At work, he has been a strong supporter of various Employee Resource Groups and currently sponsors the Multicultural Network. Joel serves on the Horizons Board of Trustees, Hawkeye Council Boy Scouts of America Board of Trustees, Junior Achievement Board of Trustees, Cedar Rapids Public Library Foundation Board of Directors, Entrepreneurial Development Center Board of Directors and is Chair of the Iowa Energy Center Board.
A community presence, Joel speaks and takes part in conversations on wide range of issues. He also served as company spokesperson throughout the devastating derecho windstorm of August 2020.
Joel is a CPA who received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1985 and an MBA in 1998 – both from the University of Iowa. He is a certified Lean Six Sigma Green belt. Joel is a lifelong learner through industry and community groups and programs.
