CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – May 6, 2008 – For the third year in a row, the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) has awarded the Jake Safety Award to the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City (CRANDIC) Railway Co., an Alliant Energy Transportation company.
The ASLRRA represents more than 400 short line and regional railroads in North America.
To receive the Jake Award, a railroad must have a yearly Frequency/Severity Index (FSI) rate lower or equal to the industry average. The FSI is based on the number of employees, total work hours, and the seriousness of injuries occurring over the course of a year. CRANDIC’s 77 employees had no lost-time work accidents in 2007 and have worked more than 2,215 days without a lost-time injury.
“Working around and operating heavy, moving equipment is inherently dangerous. Safety must be the focus of each task we perform because there is no room for error,” said Joe McGovern, chief operating officer – CRANDIC Railway. “It’s an honor to receive this award and a credit to the dedication of each of our employees.”
CRANDIC Safety Coordinator Wade Swindle says CRANDIC has dozens of programs in place to reinforce a safe work environment. “Comprehensive training, safety audits, job safety briefings, pre-shift stretching, and peer correction and mentoring are just a few of the proactive efforts that have had a positive impact,” Swindle explained.
CRANDIC owns and operates more than 100 miles of main line and switching track in four east central Iowa counties. CRANDIC has thrived for more than 100 years as a valuable business partner to eastern Iowa shippers, providing safe and efficient freight service 365 days per year.
