Second Nature is a voluntary program that allows Alliant Energy electric customers in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin to support electricity generated from renewable resources. Second Nature offers residential customers three participation levels - 25 percent, 50 percent or 100 percent of their monthly electric usage. Second Nature has more than 15,000 residential and business customers in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin who currently participate in the program. |

During 2007, Second Nature participants supported more than 49 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy. Second Nature currently contracts with a landfill gas facility and an anaerobic digester in Wisconsin, wind farms in Wisconsin and Iowa, and a solar energy initiative in Iowa. There is no special equipment to buy and no lifestyle changes needed to participate in the Second Nature program. If just two percent of Alliant Energy households join the Second Nature renewable energy program, up to 51 million kilowatt hours of non-renewable energy could be replaced with renewable energy each year. That’s enough to replace the harmful carbon dioxide released by 8,550 cars. The Second Nature program is Green-e Energy certified. Green-e Energy was established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions to provide information and an objective standard for consumers to compare renewable energy options, and to verify that consumers get what they pay for.
