Water heaters

If your water heater is more than 10 years old, it probably is 50 percent less efficient than a newer model. An old, inefficient water heater can operate for years before it fails. One way to reduce your water heating costs is to replace your old water heater with a new, higher efficiency model.

Equipment Rebate
Natural gas water heater
40 gallon tank or greater, energy factor 0.67 or greater (max. 3)
$50 each
Electric tank-type
40 gallon tank or greater, energy factor 0.93 or greater
$50 each
Natural gas tankless
Energy factor 0.80 or greater. Must be dealer installed to verify adequate gas pressure prior to installation
$300 each

Geothermal heating and cooling systems

A geothermal heating and cooling system, sometimes called a ground source heat pump, works on a simple premise: the earth below the “frost line” (usually about five feet down) is at a constant temperature of about 50 degrees year round. Heat can be taken from the ground and transferred through a heat pump to warm the air in your business during the winter. Heat can also be transferred back into the ground during summer to cool your business.

Because the heat pump is self-contained and installed indoors, geothermal systems have low maintenance and are very reliable.

Important Reminder about Minnesota Geothermal Rebates

To qualify for a geothermal rebate, equipment MUST be listed in the AHRI Directory or verified by including the AHRI certificate with the rebate claim form. The rebate payment will be based on efficiency listed on the AHRI certificate or in the AHRI directory. A geothermal rebate is calculated on a FULL LOAD only and may not exceed $5,000 (does not include desuperheater bonus).

Equipment Rebate
Geothermal (water-to-air)
systems 180,000 Btuh or 15 tons or less
Closed loop: Minimum EER = 17.1 and COP3 = 3.6 ($300 x tons) + [(EER - 17.1) x $50 x tons]
Open loop: Minimum EER = 21.1 and COP = 4.1 ($300 x tons) + [(EER - 21.1) x $50 x tons]
Desuperheater $100
