Water heaters
If your water heater is more than 10 years old, it probably is 50 percent less efficient than a newer model. An old, inefficient water heater can operate for years before it fails. One way to reduce your water heating costs is to replace your old water heater with a new, higher efficiency model.
| Equipment | Rebate |
| Electric tank type, 40 gallon tank or greater, Energy Factor (EF) 0.93 or greater | $50 each |
| Electric heat pump water heater, ENERGY STAR qualified | $100 each |
| Natural gas tank type, 40 gallon tank or greater, EF 0.67 or greater | $75 each |
| Natural gas condensing, thermal efficiency 90% or greater | $300 each |
| Natural gas tankless, EF 0.80 or greater, Must be dealer installed to verify adequate gas pressure prior to installation. | $300 each |

Insulation and Building Sealing
For a project that provides maximum impact to your bottom line, consider insulation and building sealing.
Insulation levels are specified by R-Value, which measures the insulation's ability to hold in or hold out heat. The higher the insulation's R-Value, the better its thermal performance.
If you need assistance to select an energy-smart insulation contractor, consult our guide to selecting a contractor, or use our dealer locator.
| Measure | Rebate |
| Ceiling, foundation and in-wall insulation | 70 percent of total cost of contract labor, equipment and material up to a maximum of $5,000 for each type of insulation. |
| Building Sealing | 70 percent of total cost of contract labor, equipment and material up to a maximum of $1,500 |
| Multi-family insulation and building sealing | For multi-family dwellings, call 1-866-ALLIANT (1-866-255-4268) |
Note:
Your insulation claim is subject to a pre-payment, post-installation project verification.

Geothermal heating and cooling systems
A geothermal heating and cooling system, sometimes called a ground source heat pump, works on a simple premise: the earth below the “frost line” (usually about five feet down) is at a constant temperature of about 50 degrees year round. Heat can be taken from the ground and transferred through a heat pump to warm the air in your business during the winter. Heat can also be transferred back into the ground during summer to cool your business. Because the loop is self-contained and the heat pump is installed indoors, a geothermal system can have a life expectancy of up to 50 years.
Visit the geothermal section on our Web site for more information.
| Ground source (geothermal) heat pumps (>180,000 Btu or 15 tons or less) |
|
| Closed loop: Water to air: minimum EER = 14.1 and COP = 3.3. Water to water (units must be used for heating and cooling): minimum EER = 14.1 and COP = 3.1 | ($300 x tons) + [(EER - 14.1 x $50) x tons] |
| For desuperheater | $100 |
| Open loop: Water to air: minimum EER = 16.2 and COP = 3.6 | ($300 x tons) + [(EER - 16.2 x $50) x tons] |
| For desuperheater | $100 |
Important Reminder about Iowa Geothermal Rebates
To qualify for a geothermal rebate, equipment MUST be listed in the AHRI Directory or verified by including the AHRI certificate with the rebate claim form. The rebate payment will be based on efficiency listed on the AHRI certificate or in the AHRI directory. A geothermal rebate is calculated on a PARTIAL LOAD only and may not exceed $5,000 (does not include desuperheater bonus). 2013 Iowa Geothermal (Water-To-Air) rebate form [PDF]
