As moratorium end nears, Interstate Power and Light heats up customer assistance efforts
$500,000 donation to Hometown Care Energy Fund provides heating assistance to IPL customers
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. – March 25, 2010 – Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy Company, has once again donated $500,000 to its Hometown Care Energy Fund. The Fund benefits IPL customers in need of heating assistance in its Iowa and Minnesota service territory.
“Our Hometown Care Energy Fund allows us to provide some financial relief to the customers who need it most,” said Tim Heinrich, Director of Customer Support Services for Alliant Energy. “This is the right thing to do to help our customers and these funds will help those customers who have difficulty paying for their heat during the critical winter months.”
The Hometown Care Energy Fund, which is managed by Alliant Energy, raises donations that are used by Community Action Groups to help customers in crisis, above and beyond the assistance provided by the Federal Low-Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
Donations and funds collected through the Hometown Care Energy Fund are disbursed to more than 23 community-based non-profit organizations in Iowa and Minnesota who then distribute money to those customers who meet federal poverty guidelines.
“A donation like this is very welcome news, especially at a time when we’re seeing a record number of households applying for heating assistance,” said Jerry McKim, Director of Iowa Energy Assistance. “Alliant Energy’s effort to help those households is greatly appreciated.”
In 2009 the Hometown Care Energy Fund helped more than 1,500 households across Iowa with an average grant of $245 each. Also in 2009, IPL customers donated more than $181,000 to the Fund through optional donations made when paying their bills.
Since 2000, IPL customers have donated more than $1.5 million, and Alliant Energy has donated more than $2.6 million to help IPL customers with heating assistance through the Hometown Care Energy Fund.
