More than 300,000 miles of pipelines safely bring natural gas to American homes and businesses. In fact, according to the National Transportation Safety Board, underground pipelines are the safest way to transport natural gas. To ensure our pipelines stay safe and secure, Alliant Energy inspects our natural gas system; designs reliable pipelines and invests in new technologies and pipeline integrity programs. We are also committed to educating the communities along our pipelines about our natural gas system and how to prevent, recognize and respond to natural gas leaks.
Emergency response
Despite an excellent safety record, pipeline emergencies do occur and it is important to be prepared for a pipeline incident in your community. Natural gas facilities are often near homes and businesses making proper response critical to protect the public.
Including a response procedure for pipeline incidents in your emergency preparedness plan can help prevent a serious incident. It's equally important to include your local gas utility in disaster drills. Alliant Energy is eager to work with local officials and emergency responders by offering training and assistance with emergency planning. We're also available 24 hours a day to assist in an emergency. Utility employees are specially trained to operate natural gas equipment and help make the situation safe. Because of this training, it's critical that utility employees are allowed to assist emergency responders at the scene of the incident.
Pipeline location
It's also important to know the location of pipelines in your community. Pipeline companies, like Alliant Energy, use yellow markers to show the approximate location of pipelines. These markers display the material transported, the name of the pipeline operator and a telephone number where the pipeline operator can be reached in the event of an emergency.
