Second Nature is a voluntary program that allows Alliant Energy electric customers in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin to support electricity generated from renewable resources.
Second Nature offers residential customers three participation levels - 25 percent, 50 percent or 100 percent of their monthly electric usage.
Second Nature has more than 16,500 residential and business customers in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin who currently participate in the program.
During 2008, Second Nature participants supported more than 58 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy.
Second Nature currently contracts with a landfill gas facility, an anaerobic digester and small solar providers in Wisconsin, wind farms in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa, and a solar energy initiative in Iowa.
There is no special equipment to buy and no lifestyle changes needed to participate in the Second Nature program.
If just 30,000 Alliant Energy households join the Second Nature renewable energy program at the 25% participation level, up to 72 million kilowatt hours of non-renewable energy could be replaced with renewable energy each year. That's enough to replace the harmful greenhouse gas emissions from 9,400 cars or the carbon dioxide emissions from the energy use of 4,700 homes.*
The Second Nature program is Green-e® Energy certified. Green-e Energy was established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions to provide information and an objective standard for consumers to compare renewable energy options, and to verify that consumers get what they pay for.
