At Alliant Energy we are focused on protecting the environment 365 days a year and Earth Day is a special reminder of the importance of environmental controls and energy efficiency.
We show our commitment to the environment every day, but Earth Day is a great time to celebrate the hard work of our customers, regulators and employees. By working together we are able to make a difference.

Life is easier online
Gain convenience and control by managing your account online through Alliant Energyís Paperless Billing. Signing up is an easy one-time action that lets you view your bill, payments, cost and usage history anytime, anywhere. Join more than 128,000 Alliant Energy customers who have already chosen Paperless Billing.
You can enroll in Paperless Billing today through your online account. All you need to enroll is a recent Alliant Energy utility bill.

Stay safe when storms strike
If you lose power during a storm, please remember these safety tips:
- Avoid using candles.
- Don't use charcoal or gas grills indoors or in a garage.
- Always assume downed power lines are live and stay away. Call 1-800-ALLIANT to report the damage.
- Don't drive over a downed power line.
- Don't get out of your vehicle if it comes into contact with a power line. Stay in the car and call Alliant Energy.
- Call Alliant Energy to have them shut off your electricity and natural gas service before entering a home with standing water. Standing water can extinguish pilot lights and allow natural gas to collect, creating the risk of an explosion.
Get paid to lose up to 250 pounds with Appliance Recycling
Having an extra refrigerator around the house is great on special occasions, but at an average weight of 250 pounds they aren’t easy to get rid of and they can be costing you an extra $100 or more each year in energy costs.
Alliant Energy and Focus on Energy makes recycling your old refrigerator or freezer easy. Focus on Energy will schedule a recycling contractor to pick up and properly dispose of your old appliance – and give you a check for $50!
Customers can recycle up to two appliances per calendar year. Refrigerators and freezers must be in working condition, be between 10 and 30 cubic feet in size, and clean and empty on the day of pick up.

Keeping tabs on our peregrine falcons
Alliant Energy continues to support initiatives aimed at saving peregrine falcons, which were nearly extinct in the Midwest a decade ago. While the falcons themselves have no real predators, their eggs are targeted by animals like raccoons. This is why the nesting boxes are placed up high on the stacks of power plants, where the falcons have the greatest chance of successfully hatching. Nesting boxes have been placed on the stacks at the Edgewater, Nelson Dewey and Columbia power plants. More than 1,000 young falcons have hatched in the Midwest since the start of the Raptor Resource Project’s Peregrine Utility Program in 1988.
Proper CFL disposal is a must
If you are looking for a simple way to reduce your energy costs, using compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) makes sense. They save energy, last longer than traditional bulbs, and with so many new styles they can fit into almost any lighting fixture. But when they need to be replaced - don't put them in the trash.
CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, less than half of what is in a thermometer, and they need to be safely recycled so that the bulb doesn't break open and expel the mercury into the air.

Help kids learn about energy
Summer is just around the corner. As kids get ready to exchange their classrooms for backyard baseball games and swimming lessons - make plans to keep them engaged in learning and have fun. Alliant Energy Kids is the perfect way to do both.
Alliant Energy Kids is designed to teach kids important concepts about how energy works, energy resources, conserving energy, and staying safe around energy. Although the program is developed for 4th and 5th grade classrooms, the educational materials and web activities are available to kids of all ages.
Are you ready to dig this spring?
Two working days before you put your shovel in the ground, call 811. Digger’s Hotline will get all the buried pipes and lines in your area marked for free. Remember:
- Call 811 two working days before digging.
- Wait for the underground utility lines to be marked.
- Respect marks when digging.
- Have an emergency plan if you hit an underground utility line.
If you make contact with a gas or electric line, call Alliant Energy at 1-800-ALLIANT. If natural gas is blowing, call 911.

Our commitment to the environment
Alliant Energy’s commitment to the environment guides our company’s actions to promote a clean, safe and healthy place to live. We manage air, land, water and wildlife resources and conduct our business in an environmentally sensitive and responsible manner. Caring for the environment is included in our core values.
Recently approved and proposed environmental rules will require substantial reductions in mercury, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions at our generating stations. We’ve already begun installing or have plans to install several types of emission controls at several of our generating stations.
Columbia Energy Center (Portage, Wisconsin)
Construction began in March 2012 to install baghouse and scrubber systems on Units 1 and 2. These controls will reduce emissions to comply with state and federal rules. We currently anticipate these controls to be fully operational in 2014.
Secure your pet
Help our service technicians by keeping your pets away from meters and other utility equipment. Even the friendliest pooch can become an aggressive guard dog when a stranger comes around.
Animals must be restrained by a leash or chain anchored to a permanent fixture, crated, or secured away from the meter or work area. Animals secured by their owners are not considered restrained.
To avoid potentially unsafe confrontations, Alliant Energy workers will not set foot on a property if a dog or other potentially dangerous animal is not restrained. Gas leaks and emergencies require employees to use their best judgment to make conditions safe and prevent injury.
If you have installed, or plan to install, an invisible pet fence, please call 1-800-ALLIANT so we can note that on your account. This helps protect homeowners from liability and our service technicians from injuries.
Second Nature offers you a choice
You know you have a choice when it comes to how much energy you use, but did you know you also have a choice of where your power comes from?
With Alliant Energy's Second Nature program, we're able to buy more earth-friendly renewable energy produced from wind power and bioenergy. It's an easy and effective way to do something good for the environment.
Second Nature means fewer fossil fuels are consumed, more valuable energy resources are available for future generations, and air quality is improved for all of us to enjoy.
There's no special equipment to buy, you don't have to change your lifestyle, and your energy will be just as reliable as the service you have now.
How much does it cost?
You choose your level of support: 25%, 50% or 100%. From there, your contribution is calculated based on your home's actual monthly electric usage (kWh) for the month. This amount is then added to your regular monthly Alliant Energy bill.
