Tom Newport, Cedar River Artisans and Eastern Iowa Arts Academy unveil ‘Lineman’

Sculpture to take residence in lobby of Alliant Tower

Lineman SculptureCEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – February 26, 2014 – Move over Reddy Kilowatt, there is a new ‘Lineman’ in town.

‘Lineman’ a sculpture created by Tom Newport and the Cedar River Artisans in collaboration with Eastern Iowa Arts Academy students from Roosevelt Middle School and Alliant Energy was unveiled today at the Alliant Tower.

The sculpture is the culmination of an eight-month project that combined outstanding local, professional artistic talent with a utility company. ‘Lineman’ stands more than seven feet tall. The sculpture consists of electric industrial equipment, such as fuses, electric meters, insulators and lightning arrestors used by Alliant Energy to provide safe and reliable service to customers. The artists collected the materials from Alliant Energy’s salvage and stockpiles to use in the creation of the final sculpture.

“What a tremendous opportunity for our aspiring artists to work with professional artists in the community,” said Tom Aller, president of the Alliant Energy Foundation. “We were pleased to partner with the Cedar River Artisans and Eastern Iowa Arts Academy on this project. I want to especially thank the students for their efforts on this great project. ‘Lineman’ truly is a tribute to all of our employees out in the field, rain or shine, who are working every day to keep the lights on and our customers safe.”

Students from Roosevelt Middle School that are part of the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy worked with Tom Newport and the Cedar River Artisans to design and build the sculpture. The project allowed the students to hone their artistic skills, while learning more about the equipment used by Alliant Energy to provide energy service. The Alliant Energy Foundation provided a grant to the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy for this project.

‘Lineman’ will be on display in the lobby of the Alliant Tower. Customers or the general public are invited to stop by and view the sculpture during normal business hours.
