Alliant Energy working on Power Iowa projects in Peosta

Upgrades and investments help prepare for the future

PEOSTA, Iowa – March 12, 2013 – Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, is wrapping up work on a Power Iowa project to install new equipment for customers in Peosta.

This Power Iowa project involves installing nearly a mile – 5,000 feet – of underground electric power lines west and south of town. These lines will eventually connect to a new substation; construction on that substation is expected to finish in May 2013.

“Peosta has grown, and we are growing our equipment with the community,” said Randy Dunkel, manager of customer operations. “We hope these investments of more than $2.4 million will help Peosta continue to be a good place to live and do business.”

Electricity travels to communities through high-voltage transmission lines. Then, it goes to a substation that lowers the voltage so it can travel easily and safety to homes and businesses.

As part of this project, Alliant Energy retired an older substation in 2012. It will be replaced with the new, larger unit that crews started building last October. This added capacity will give Peosta room to grow with enhanced electrical infrastructure for businesses and neighborhoods. The new equipment also increases redundancy and reliability for the community.

Alliant Energy’s 2013 Power Iowa Plan includes approximately $94 million of planned investments this year in upgrading overhead and underground electric lines, electric substations, and natural gas infrastructure. Power Iowa’s goal is to improve system reliability, reduce outages, and provide more reliable power to Alliant Energy’s Iowa customers.
