Cedar Rapids nonprofits receive $28,000 from Alliant Energy and its Foundation

Gifts to food pantries, nonprofits part of holiday giving effort, ongoing grant making

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Dec. 21, 2012 – Several nonprofits received donations totaling $9,500 from Alliant Energy as part of its year-end giving campaign, while others received more than $18,500 from the Alliant Energy Foundation as part of its grant making process.

Best Buddies International received $5,000 from Alliant Energy as part of its year-end giving campaign, while Iowa Legal Aid received $4,500. The funds provide needed support for services to low-income families and individuals in Cedar Rapids during the holiday season.

Alliant Energy is spreading a little extra holiday cheer to more than 100 food pantries and human needs organizations across its service area through a year-end giving campaign.

At the same time, the Alliant Energy Foundation has contributed an additional $18,500 to local nonprofits to support community development efforts as part of its regular grant-making cycle.

  • Carl and Mary Koehler History Center received $5,000 to enhance and expand its model railroad historical exhibit of downtown Cedar Rapids circa 1954.
  • Eastern Iowa Arts Academy received $5,000 to provide arts programming and classes to underserved populations including low-income families and individuals with special needs.
  • Linn-Mar School Foundation received $2,500 to purchase new microscopes for the Linn-Mar Science Department for the study of biology, physiology and environmental science.

Other organizations receiving grants include the Catherine McAuley Center, Young Parents Network, Iowa Art Works, and Neighborhood Transportation Service.

These grants were part of the Alliant Energy Foundation’s Community Grants Program, which has awarded more than $275,000 in grants during its third-of-three grant cycles in 2012, bringing this year’s total to nearly $1,000,000 provided to more than 532 non-profit organizations.

“Assisting our neighbors in need and making a difference in the community is important to us,” said Tom Aller, Alliant Energy Foundation President. “We appreciate the support of the Cedar Rapids area and in turn, we believe that it is important for us to give back. During this season of giving and throughout the year, we are grateful to be able to make a difference here.”
