CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Nov. 12, 2012 - Interstate Power and Light Company, an Alliant Energy company, recently collaborated with Mercy Medical Center to implement energy efficiencies within Mercy’s new Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. The new energy-saving technologies and techniques have contributed to the facility’s designation as a LEED certified building. LEED certification recognizes excellence in building design that creates significant and measurable energy savings through sustainable design practices.
The Hall-Perrine Cancer Center is a 100,000-square-foot, $24.6 million facility located on the Mercy campus. The building's sustainable design includes LED or low-wattage fluorescent lighting fixtures throughout the building, enhanced rooftop and window insulation, and low-flow plumbing fixtures. These features will help the building reduce its annual energy usage by more than 186,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh), compared to a building built without the upgrades.
“Mercy is pleased to have partnered with Alliant Energy, as well as our designers and contractors, on the construction of the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, and in our efforts to achieve LEED certification for the building,” said Jason Willis, the director of Facilities Management at Mercy. “LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system. We are proud to be recognized for our efforts to be good stewards of natural resources and to improve environmental quality.”
In recognition of the energy-saving technologies incorporated in the cancer center, Alliant Energy today presented Mercy Medical Center with a check for more than $47,000 through Alliant Energy’s custom rebate program.
“This building is very visible in the community, and we’re proud to be able to help showcase the benefits and appeal of using energy-efficient technology,” said Vern Gebhart, the vice president of Energy Delivery at Alliant Energy.
Alliant Energy offers numerous reward programs for residential, business, farm or commercial facilities in Iowa. Custom rebates are available for energy-savings projects that do not qualify for standard equipment rebates. Making energy-savings improvements in commercial facilities reduces energy use and results in lower energy bills for years to come.
