ALBERT LEA, MN – Oct. 16, 2012 – Alliant Energy is reminding customers that Energy Assistance Program (EAP) agencies are now accepting applications for the upcoming heating season. The program provides dollars to moderate and low-income level households to help pay a portion of their winter heating bills.
“We want customers to know they do not have to wait until they are behind on their utility bill to get help,” said Tim Heinrich, director of customer support services, Alliant Energy. “We encourage customers to check their eligibility and apply as soon as possible.”
For customers who do not qualify for energy assistance, Alliant Energy urges them to call 1-800 ALLIANT (800-255-4268) if they are at risk of falling behind in their bill.
Energy assistance payments depend upon household size, income level, and home energy costs. The program helps households with income meeting eligibly guidelines. For example, in Minnesota, a family of four that earns $42,789 annually or less, or a two-person family that earns $29,097 annually or less, may qualify for energy assistance dollars.
To obtain energy assistance, qualified Minnesota residents can apply to their local county energy assistance agency for EAP funds anytime from October 11, 2012 through April 15, 2013. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible by calling 1-800-657-3710 to locate the nearest county agency that provides energy assistance funds, or by visiting mn.gov/commerce/energy/consumers/Heating-Assistance. Qualification for energy assistance is not affected if someone is behind on their energy bills, or rents instead of owns a home.
Applicants must bring these items to the agencies to determine eligibility:
- Photo identification
- A copy of proof of income received in the last 3 full calendar months for each household member
- A copy of your last heating bill and last electric bill
- Social Security number
The Minnesota Department of Commerce administers the federally funded Energy Assistance Program (EAP). Services may include:
- Payment of energy bills
- Help with utility disconnection
- Education on efficient and safe use of home heating energy
- Repair or replacement of homeowners’ malfunctioning heating systems.
