New alert system is being tested at the Prairie du Sac Hydro

Sirens and audio messages will be used to inform visitors of changing conditions

PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. – August 29, 2012 – Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), an Alliant Energy company, is installing a new alert system at its Prairie du Sac Hydroelectric facility that will include sirens and audio messages to inform visitors of changing conditions at the Hydro as well as potential emergency situations. WPL will perform tests of the siren during the week of September 10th. Once operational, the alert system will be tested in conjunction with Sauk County siren testing.

“While the Prairie du Sac Hydro has an excellent safety record since it became operational in 1914, our first priority is public safety,” said Scott Wilson, Alliant Energy Manager of Hydroelectric Generation. “This new warning system will provide a variety of siren tones and verbal messages that we will use to let visitors know when the river level and flow will change below the dam.”

The new Prairie du Sac Hydro alert system is one part of the facility’s overall emergency action plan that is updated annually in partnership with federal, state and local emergency management agencies. For more information on dam safety, please visit www.alliantenergy.com/damsafety.
