CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – July 6, 2012 – Alliant Energy – Interstate Power and Light Co. (IPL), an Alliant Energy company is encouraging customers to voluntarily reduce their energy consumption today until 7:00 p.m. Customers are asked to reduce the amount of electricity they use to help reduce system demand. In compliance with Iowa code, IPL is initiating a Peak Alert to encourage a reduction in the amount of energy that is used.
When the temperature exceeds 95 degrees for one day and is expected to rise above 95 degrees on the following day, IPL calls a Peak Alert for the second day. IPL will also issue a Peak Alert if the temperature is expected to be above 90 degrees after two consecutive days of temperatures above 95 degrees.
IPL does not expect to reach the record peak demand of 3699 megawatts set on July 18, 2011. In addition, it is not expected that there will be a shortage of energy supply, nor reliability issues for customers. However, a reduction in usage of electricity during the period of peak demand will ease the burden placed on the utility’s system by growth in peak demand and may help delay or reduce the size of future rate increases.
IPL places a top priority on providing reliable energy service. The company also reminds customers they can play an active part in controlling energy use. Energy conservation not only helps reduce the amount of energy used, but it can also save customers money on their utility bills. IPL offers the following voluntary actions customers can take to reduce their electricity consumption safely and comfortably.
• Turn the air conditioner thermostat to 80 degrees, and make sure all windows and doors are closed when the air conditioner is running.
• Where possible, turn off central air conditioners and use fans instead.
• Shade windows or close drapes on the south and west sides of the home.
• Use heat-generating appliances (ovens, dishwashers and laundry appliances) after 9 p.m.
• Turn off non-essential lighting, appliances, and electrical equipment, such as dehumidifiers, hot tubs and waterbeds.
• Turn down electric water heaters to between 95 and 105 degrees.
• Avoid opening refrigerators and freezers more than necessary.
• Avoid using range tops and ovens to prepare meals. Instead, use a microwave oven or outdoor grill.
• Keep an eye out for neighbors, especially those with health problems.
