Alliant Energy asks customers without electric service in Ottumwa to check meter sockets for damages

OTTUMWA, Iowa – June 18, 2012 – Alliant Energy reminds customers who remain without electric service in Wapello County to check their meter sockets on their homes and businesses for damage caused by the recent storm. Meter sockets need to be repaired in order to have electric service restored by Alliant Energy.

Meter sockets consist of the equipment where the electric line from the electric pole connects to the customers’ meter. As a result of the storm, the meter sockets’ connection points could be pulled away from a home or business, causing damage to the electric wiring or equipment within the building.

If a customer is without power, but their neighbors have power, it’s possible they could have damage to this equipment.

Repairs to meter sockets, weatherheads, meter boxes and other hazardous equipment need to be done – and should only be done - by a licensed electrician. By law, Alliant Energy can repair only the incoming service line and the meter itself.

Always make sure electricians are fully insured and licensed by your community or state. Once any repair work to this equipment is done, customers should call Alliant Energy at 1-800-ALLIANT (800-255-4268) to have service restored when possible.

Alliant Energy crews continue to restore to power to customers who do not have damage, and appreciate the patience of its customers.
