Mason City Community School District and Alliant Energy ‘team up’ to save energy and lower costs

School District installs energy efficiency equipment; receives $204,679 rebate

Mason City, Iowa – November 27, 2013 – Alliant Energy’s Iowa utility recently teamed up with the Mason City Community School District to install energy efficient equipment at the John Adams Middle School and the Mason City High School.

As part of the project, the Mason City Community School District completed a number energy efficiency projects, including the installation of a new water-cooled chiller and natural gas condensing boiler and heating and cooling pump upgrades. The school district also installed carbon dioxide sensors in the ventilation system for control of outside air and lighting control sensors that respond to occupancy or changes in daylight.

“We appreciate the partnership with Alliant Energy in this renovation project on the secondary campus,” said Dr. Anita Micich, Superintendent – Mason City Community School District.  “As you know, the Mason City Community School District has had an Energy Education Program in place for several years and our Board of Education has been committed to ensuring that equipment that has been purchased to replace the old worn out systems is highly efficient to keep costs under control.  The program with Alliant Energy is a wonderful ‘perk’ to keep us all moving forward in conservation of energy.”

The projects were completed under Alliant Energy’s Commercial New Construction Program. The school district expects the energy efficiency projects to result in annual energy cost savings of more than 34 percent, or $167,292. The school district anticipates reducing their annual electric and natural gas usage by approximately 15 percent and 48 percent, respectively.

In addition to the anticipated energy savings, the school district received a rebate of $204,679.

“The Mason City Community School District has shown a commitment to being a leader in energy efficiency,” said Jim Collins, Alliant Energy key account manager. “We are proud to partner with the school district on these projects and we will continue to look for ways to further increase the energy efficiency of their facilities.”

Alliant Energy offers the Commercial New Construction Program to businesses seeking to implement new or innovative ways to reduce energy consumption. The program is available to Alliant Energy retail electric and gas customers located in its Iowa and Minnesota service area.
