After completing the construction of a SCR system and baghouse at the Lansing Generating Station in Lansing, Iowa in 2010, Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL) is now working on the installation of a scrubber on Lansing Unit 4, to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. We anticipate construction will begin in 2013 with commercial operation expected in 2015.
Previous project:
In the summer of 2010, IPL initiated start-up of Alliant Energy’s first large scale emission control project at Lansing Generating Station Unit 4. We installed a baghouse/carbon injection system and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to reduce mercury (Hg) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions.
Preliminary results have been impressive, with reductions of approximately 90% in Hg emissions and 80% in NOx emissions as compared to the historic emissions levels over the last five years. The next steps for this project include determining the long-term performance capability of the air pollution control equipment and fine-tuning the operation so that it continues to achieve emissions reductions over a variety of operating conditions.
