Riverside Energy Center expansion groundbreaking event marks start of construction
The shiny shovels were digging, and the ceremonial dirt was flying to signal the start of construction for our Riverside expansion. Excitement was high for the more than 200 people gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony in the Town of Beloit on September 22, 2016 to kick off the construction of our newest natural gas-fueled generating station.
Alliant Energy leadership, state and local government officials, labor union representatives and more gathered for the special event. The $700 million Riverside expansion will be one of the state’s largest economic development projects. It will create more than 1,000 total construction jobs per year between 2017 and 2020. The total economic benefits during construction are more than $250 million.
The Riverside expansion is an approximately 700-megawatt, combined-cycle, natural gas-fueled generating station that will be able to power more than half a million homes. It will include a 2-megawatt solar facility, whose clean energy will offset a portion of the natural gas station’s auxiliary power needs.
Our construction of an advanced technology, highly efficient natural gas-fired facility will help keep future energy costs low in our service territory and across the state. Beyond the benefits of ensuring competitive costs for our customers, there will be significant economic development benefits for local suppliers and businesses throughout the state.
